A child and two adults are injured after a shooting in Marlow Heights, Maryland Thursday night, according to Prince George's County police.

Officers said they responded to the 4500 block of Akron Street around 7:50 p.m. for a reported shooting.

Prince George's County officials shared an update.

According to officials, two people began shooting weapons, and it's possible that gunfire was exchanged.

One child was taken to a hospital in critical condition and two adults were also injured, officials said.

"The people in this community were here tonight celebrating with each other having a barbecue doing exactly what they should be able to do and they have a right to do in their community when someone brought a gun to that occasion," said Prince George's County Angela Alsobrooks.

Despite the fireworks, Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz said there was no delay in officers' response to the incident.

"With all of the gunshots, it was difficult when people are hearing fireworks and they realize it's actually shooting. So that did occur," Chief Aziz said.
