Citizens in Plymouth concerned over police shortages

PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WNCT) — In Plymouth, concerns are growing over police shortages, impacting the department's ability to respond to calls promptly.

They're currently operating with just four officers on duty, including the chief. These four officers are working overtime. Plymouth Police Chief Louis Banks said he's patrolling for hours. The department has had to rely on assistance from the county's sheriff's office.

To help alleviate the strain, the town's city council had an emergency meeting last week. They have since raised the starting salary for officers from $37,000 to $47,500.

"The council was behind us in increasing the pay and making us more competitive with other smaller agencies," Chief Banks said. "I think that'll give us a little more tools and resources to go out and attract some new officers."

The Chief is asking for patience from the community as they try to recruit more officers.
