SAPD officer shoots woman waving gun and pointing it at police in Medical Center area, Chief McManus says
SAN ANTONIO — A woman was hospitalized after pointing a gun at police and drawing the fire of one officer, resulting in her being shot Thursday evening in the Medical Center, Police Chief William McManus said.
That unidentified woman was believed to be in surgery shortly after the incident, which unfolded around 5:30 pm. in the area of Babcock and Roanoke Run, near CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital. The officer who fired is believed to have shot just one round, and has been with the San Antonio Police Department for less than a year.
McManus said officers initially responded to reports of a suspicious person "walking up and down the block, waving a gun around." When officers arrived, he said, "she turned, waved the gun, pointed it," which is when the unidentified officer fired and hit her in the abdomen. It isn't believed that the woman ever fired, and no officers were hurt.
The woman has a criminal history and is believed to be in her 40s, the chief said, adding his information was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.
Responding to a question about SAPD's body camera devices, McManus said that system "was down for a while" earlier in the day, but it's unknown if it was functioning again at the time of the Medical Center incident. SAPD protocols call for releasing body camera footage of incidents involving officers discharging their weapons within 30 days if they struck someone.
It isn't believed the nearby hospital was placed on a lockdown status at any point.
This marks the 16th shooting involving San Antonio police this year.
