Coast Guard rescues three from sinking boat near Honolulu Harbor
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Coast Guard rescued three people from a sinking recreational vessel about nine nautical miles south of Honolulu Harbor on Thursday.

"We're relieved that we got there quickly and safely brought everyone aboard before the situation worsened," said Cmdr. Kristin Hahn, who coordinated the rescue.
"This incident highlights the importance of having the right safety equipment and working closely with local agencies like the Honolulu Fire Department."
The rescue operation began around 10:37 a.m. when the Honolulu Fire Department alerted Coast Guard Sector Honolulu about the 25-foot boat, Ichiban, which was taking on water.
In response, a helicopter crew and a boat crew were dispatched to the scene.

Once on site, the helicopter crew deployed a rescue swimmer who assessed the rapidly sinking vessel. The swimmer determined it was safest to hoist all three occupants out of the water.
All three individuals were safely lifted just before the Ichiban sank in over 400 feet of water.
They were taken to Air Station Barbers Point, where Hawaii EMS conducted wellness checks.
Reports indicate the boat had only 80 gallons of diesel fuel and some hydraulic oils on board, and no salvage efforts are planned due to the depth.

The Coast Guard urges all boaters to keep their vessels properly maintained and equipped with essential safety gear, including life jackets and emergency communication devices.
