We're due for colder weather and we'll finally see more of a chill this week, with the potential for official low temperatures to reach 32o or below for the first time this season. The 30-year average date for the first freezing or below temperature at O'Hare Airport is October 19th. Over the last decade (2014-2023) the average first freeze date is about two weeks later, November 3rd. During that 10 year period, the earliest freeze was October 13th and the latest was November 12th.

The first freeze of the season has happened on October 30th three times over the last decade. That happened in 2014, 2019, and 2023. As for the all-time record first seasonal freeze or lower in Chicago:

Earliest: Sept. 22, 1995 (32o)

Latest: Nov 24, 1931 (30o)

Super typhoon Man-Yi swept across the Philippines' main island of Luzon on Sunday, threatening heavy rain in the capital region Metro Manila, after triggering more than a million evacuations and damaging buildings in several areas. Packing winds of 185 kph (115 mph), it weakened slightly after hitting land in the town of Panganiban in Catanduanes province on Saturday night to arrive over the coastal waters of Camarines Norte province by 8 a.m., weather officials said. "We evacuated because every time there is a typhoon, the water rises in the nearby river," said Amalia Santisas, one those living near coastal areas in Manila, the capital, who followed evacuation orders.

For the first time in days, the Northeast was under no red flag warnings, but officials cautioned that fire danger in the region remains high as drought conditions persist. All red flag warnings, which signal critical fire weather conditions like strong winds and low relative humidity, were lifted throughout the Northeast Saturday evening as conditions improved following days of wildfires that broke out across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusets.
