LUZERNE COUNTY Commission for Women sponsors essay contest The Luzerne
County Commission for Women, in cooperation with the Luzerne Intermediate
Unit, is sponsoring an essay contest for all sixth- through 12th-grade
students in Luzerne County. The contest is titled “An Extraordinary Century
for Women – Now Imagine the Future.” Students must write an essay about the
most important problem facing women in the future, and offer a solution.
Essays must be submitted by Dec. 20. For more information, call Dawn Seidel,
collection of new caps, mittens, scarves and gloves is under way at
participating M&T Bank locations, to benefit the Salvation Army. Donations can
be dropped off in the bins located at the local branches. The drive will end
on Jan. 7, 2000. Local businesses, individuals and nursing homes wishing to
participate in the drive, may contact the manager of their nearest M&T Bank
branch. For more information, call 824-8741. RSVP seeks volunteers for tax
assistance The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is recruiting senior
volunteers age 55 and older to assist seniors and low-income individuals with
federal and state income tax, Pennsylvania Rent Rebate forms and PACE.
Individuals should have knowledge and experience in tax preparation.
Volunteers must attend training sessions in January, pass the take-home exam
and volunteer a minimum of once a week from February through April 15.
Volunteers are needed in Wilkes-Barre and Kingston. If interested, call RSVP,
Aging and federally by the Corporation for National Service. Hospice needs
volunteers Northeast Health & Hospice Care Inc., a regional hospice-care
provider, needs volunteers to provide companionship and respite visits for
patients with terminal illnesses. Volunteers are needed in Luzerne and
Lackawanna counties. Individuals are needed for daytime hours especially.
Volunteers need to provide their own transportation and be willing to attend
an informative training program. Church and community groups are invited to

dinner at Plain & Fancy. Sept. 25-29: Rocking Horse Ranch, Hyland, N.Y. Trip
