Cooler weather settling over the region

Oct. 16—bluefield — Summer weather had definitely slipped Tuesday as the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., issued a freeze warning for Wednesday morning and raised the possibilty of snow flurries in the region's higher elevations.

Today's freeze warning started at 2 a.m. and was set to end at 10 a.m. The trend is going away from the hotter temperatures experienced throughout the summer.

"Yes, it looks that way at least this week," said meteorologist Ben Gruver with the National Weather Service. "We do warm up to the weekend, of course."

A high of 70 degrees is expected Sunday with 71 degrees on Monday.

Gruver said the current downward temperature trend is "probably on par" with what is expected during October as the growing season end, so freeze warnings are not unexpected.

The Mercer County area can expect nighttime low temperature near freezing and maybe a little below freezing, he said. The Raleigh County and Fayette County areas can expect the same weather conditions as the week progresses.

The Beckley area could see snow flurries along the local mountains' western slopes. Snowshoe Ski Resort could see some early snow, and it was possible in western Greenbrier County.

According to the National Weather Service, Tazewell County, Va. could see a high temperature of 45 degrees today.
