CT's U.S. Sen. Murphy And His Wife Separating After 17 Years: Report
CONNECTICUT — U.S. Senator Chris Murphy and his wife Catherine Holahan have announced their separation.
The couple has been married since August 2007 , with two sons, ages 16 and 13.
The joint decision to separate was an amicable one, Hearst has reported .
"We've been on quite a journey together these last twenty years," the couple wrote in an email Friday morning to family and friends.
"After much reflection and discussion, we have decided to separate as a couple. We do so with deep care and respect for each other, and with a focus on continuing to be friends and loving, collaborative parents to our boys whom we adore."
The announcement was obtained by The Hartford Courant , the first to report the story.
The couple met at the University of Connecticut, where both received their law degrees, according to the NY Times .
Murphy won his third term in the U.S. Senate last week, defeating Republican Matthew Corey in a rematch of their 2018 race. He first won the seat by defeating Republican Linda McMahon in 2012.
"We have built two fulfilling, meaningful careers. We have moved from New Haven and Southington to Cheshire and Washington and Hartford," the couple wrote. "We have shared so many memories and moments with each of you."
