Dallas defeats Wyoming Seminary to take over first in WVC boys swimming

Dallas overcame a strong start by Wyoming Seminary to defeat the Blue Knights 104-66 Friday in a battle of first-place teams in Wyoming Valley Conference boys swimming.

Dallas improved to 6-0 while Seminary fell to 5-1.

Jakob Baur (200 free, 100 fly), Richie de Luna (200 IM) and Nansen Wang (50 free) won events for Seminary, but Dallas posted second- and third-place finishes in three of those races.

Shane Szczecinski posted Dallas’ first individual victory in the 100 freestyle event. Tommy Doran (500 free), Jason Puza (100 back) and Dennis Dukinas (100 breast) followed with individual wins. The Mountaineers also swept all three relay races.

Holy Redeemer 112, Berwick 36

Matt Dihn and Chris Schell led Holy Redeemer past Berwick by helping the team place first in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. Dihn also placed first in the 100 butterfly and Schell placed first in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Dallas 111, Wyoming Seminary 72

Melissa Leonard won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle races to help Dallas remain undefeated. Mia Reinert won the diving.

Seminary was led by double winners Aviah Dahlgren (100 fly, 100 back) and Kylee Kolbicka (50 free, 100 free).

GIRLS SWIMMING

Holy Redeemer 92, Berwick 78

Greta Walting led the Royals to victory by helping win the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. She also won the 200 IM.

Sydney Lloyd led Berwick by winning the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and swimming a leg on the winning 400 free

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dallas 55, Crestwood 46

Dallas topped Crestwood behind 18 points from Lauren Charlton.

Helena Jardine led the way for the Comets with 17 points.

Wyoming Area 44, Wyoming Seminary 39

The Warriors defeated Wyoming Seminary behind a 19-point performance from Cassidy Orzel. Nicole Silinskie added 12 points.

Ava Bufalino led the Blue Knights with 12 points.

Lake-Lehman 62, Northwest 23

Sarah Salus scored 24 points to lead the Black Knights. Claire Dougherty added 14 points.

Charleigh Miner led Northwest with seven points.

Holy Redeemer 53, Hanover Area 15

Holy Redeemer rolled past the Hawks behind good defense and 14 points from Sam Yencha.

Madison Hooper had 11 points for Hanover Area.

Wyoming Valley West 44, Pittston Area 34

Trinity Johnson scored 13 points, Haylie Oliphant scored 12 and Toni Amato added 11 as the Spartans defeated Pittston Area.

Nicole Zambetti paced Pittston Area with nine points.

Nanticoke Area 58, Wilkes-Barre Area 54

Abby Cullen and Lauren Casey each had 18 points as Nanticoke Area held off Wilkes-Barre Area.

Riley Baird added 13 for Nanticoke Area.

Allycia Harris scored 19 and Vanessa Luna netted 17 to pace WBA.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lake-Lehman 42, Northwest 40

Neil Dougherty scored 14 points and Max Paczewski had 12 to lead Lake-Lehman.

Walker Yaple led the Rangers with a game-high 17 points.

PSU Wilkes-Barre 74, PSU Allegheny 72

The Mountain Lions edged PSU Allegheny behind a tip-in buzzer-beater from Pittston Area graduate Jordan Black and 20 points from Kevin Major.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PSU Wilkes-Barre 57, PSU Allegheny 40

PSU Wilkes-Barre cruised past PSU Allegheny behind three players with double-digit scoring performances.

Jessica Charles led the group with 15 points followed by Qiana Vigo with 12 points and Sheila Carr with 10.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Wilkes 5, Lebanon Valley 1

The Colonels had five different goal scorers as they defeated Lebanon Valley.

Dylan Kuipers, Tyler Barrow, Devon Schell, Donald Flynn and Joey Pasquini all scored and Michael Patterson-Jones stopped 13 shots.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

King’s 3, Alvernia 2

The Monarchs posted their first-ever conference victory with a win over Alvernia.

Maggie Gould, Caitlin Redden and Erin King scored for King’s.

Erica Sheaffer scored for the Colonels and Allyson Joly recorded 39 saves.
