Davenport man convicted of burglary tells judge ‘I need help’ before sentence
A 27-year-old man who pleaded guilty to burglary told Judge John Telleen on Wednesday "I need help" before the judge sentenced him to prison.
At the sentencing hearing in Scott County Court, the prosecutor said Adams has two prior burglary convictions and "a trio of methamphetamine charges." Adams' attorney said Adams takes responsibility for his actions, and that Adams has a drug problem.
"Your honor, I do have a pretty bad meth problem," Adams said. "I need help."
Telleen sentenced David Adams to a sentence of up to five years in prison, with credit for time served in Scott County Jail.
A garage, a burglary and stop sticks
Court documents show that on Jan. 19, 2024, Adams and another defendant were spotted by a Scott County Sheriff's deputy. They had entered a residential garage in the 24000 block of 205th Street in LeClaire without permission and were seen by the deputy leaving the garage with a handful of tools in their possession.
Affidavits show the deputy identified himself and told them to stop, but they got into a vehicle and left. The deputy followed, activating both his lights and siren. The two refused to stop and stop-sticks were used to disable the car near Arconic. The men were arrested and admitted in a post-Miranda interview that they were in the garage.
