DELPHI MURDERS TRIAL: Judge Gull to hear three motions before trial begins

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - 12 jurors and four alternates were chosen from Allen County this week for the Delphi murders trial.

The trial for Richard Allen , accused of killing 14-year-old Liberty German and 13-year-old Abigail Williams in Delphi more than seven years ago, is set to last through mid-November.

Before the trial begins, Special Judge Frances Gull will hear three motions on October 17 at the Allen County Courthouse.

The first motion that will be discussed is whether the jury will be allowed to visit the scene where the girls' bodies were found, which Allen's defense team wants.

The second motion is whether or not Allen's confessions to the murders of Abby and Libby will be able to be used in the trial.

The third and final motion was one the prosecution brought forward. That one has to do with whether two widely circulated sketches and drawings investigators released when they were looking for the suspect will be allowed to be used in court.

Indiana University law professor Jody Madeira explains why the prosecution doesn't want them allowed, "The prosecution basically does not want them coming into trial, because they could confuse the jury, and they are not planning on introducing the witnesses that helped provide those sketches during the trial and so they're basically saying they're irrelevant."

The trial is set to begin Friday, October 18 in Carroll County. Opening statements will be heard then.
