Demons dive into Texas for second fall tennis event

T.Brown1 hr ago

After hosting the Lady Demons Invitational tournament this past weekend, the Northwestern State tennis team heads to Texas to participate in the Diving Eagle invite on the campus of North Texas, a three-day event that begins on Friday.

"As long as we keep building on last weekend, it will be a good weekend," says coach Marcos Morelli. "What we can do on the court and the culture of the team impressed me."

"The rust is not going to go away, and the nerves are not going to go away. If you're not feeling great, start from scratch, start from the bottom and work your way out. Be willing to find solutions."

Six of the Lady Demons are traveling to Denton. Two of those six players are senior Tjasa Kleivsar and junior transfer Zoi Spyrou, who paired up together to capture a championship in their doubles draw on Sunday at the Lady Demons Invitational.

The others making the trip are sophomores Maria Farina and Honoka Umeda and freshmen Pika Doberlet and Valeria Ortega.

Umeda secured third place in her singles draw during the first fall tournament of the season.

Klevisar and Farina both won their consolation finals in their respective singles draws at the Lady Demon Invitational.

The pairing of Farina and Doberlet finished strong as they won the consolation finals in the doubles draw for the Lady Demons.

The Lady Demons will compete against new foes this weekend, including Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech, and UT Arlington.

Following the Diving Eagle Invite, Northwestern State continues its tournament run the following weekend at Conway, Arkansas, to participate in the UCA Invitational, a two-day tournament that starts Sept. 27.
