Wyoming Seminary isn’t the only team to go undefeated and uncrowned in Wyoming
Valley Conference field hockey.

It also happened to Crestwood 16 years ago.
The difference between now and then is that Seminary will get a second
chance to win a title in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.

Seminary (15-0-2 vs. WVC, 10-0-2 in 2A) hosts Crestwood (14-1-2, 10-1-1) at

hosts Lackawanna Trail (15-4, 9-3) in a rematch of a semifinal shocker from
last season.

Today’s winners play for the District 2 Class 2A title at 5 p.m. on
Wednesday at Lackawanna County Stadium. The district champ and runner-up
advance to states.

Seminary was the only undefeated team in the WVC, but finished second to
Lehman in the Class 2A regular-season. Lehman’s loss was to Wyoming Valley
West, a Class 3A team, and didn’t count in the divisional standings.

Crestwood finished 9-0-3 in its division in 1985, but wound up second to
Dallas, which finished 11-1. The huge difference back then is that there were
no District 2 playoffs. The WVC regular-season champ was declared the district
champ and advance to the state playoffs.

After Crestwood finished undefeated and uncrowned, District 2 started
holding playoffs to determine the champ. The Comets have made it to districts
every year, and have advanced to states every year.

Lehman had its string of five consecutive trips to the state playoffs
snapped last season with a 2-1 loss to Trail in last year’s semifinals. The
Black Knights are pretty much in the same position as last year, entering the
playoffs as WVC Class 2A champs and the top seed. The Lions are the fourth
seed.
