Do Your Job: Rhino baths to wasp stings; a day in the life of an El Paso zookeeper

J.Nelson45 min ago

From rhino baths to wasp stings, this is what KFOX14 Morning News Forecaster Hannah Fresquez learned about being a zookeeper at the El Paso Zoo.

She started her stint in the role learning the basics, like what a Zookeeper does and what their responsibilities are to the animals and the Zoo.

The job of a zookeeper extends beyond being around exotic animals, as there is lots of work that goes on behind the scenes daily, ranging from cleaning up after the animals to making sure they're in tip-top shape (good health).

Though it's not always an easy task.

Something Fresquez learned when she started her day in the rhino exhibit with the greater one-horned rhino Taj.

Getting straight to the not-so-attractive parts of the job she picked up Rhino feces and sprayed Taj down.

Zookeeper Mo explained a bit more about how they interact with Taj, and help keep him in shape.

Being 5,000 pounds, if he's not willing to do something, I can't force it...So it's all on his terms...as far as if he wants to condition, we will work with him with conditioning.

Fresquez also went to the muddy Przewalski horse exhibit where she filled their feeders with hay and sprayed off the area.

When filling the feeders with hay, she also experienced firsthand how unexpected life as a Zookeeper can be, getting stung by a wasp.
