Don’t flush that! Hubbard mayor warns
HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Hubbard Mayor Ken Kyle took to social media this week to warn residents about what not to flush down the toilet or pour down the drain.
Clogged pipes are a concern for all municipalities, and the proliferation of baby wipes and "flushable wipes" is putting a strain on systems.
Kyle shared Flushing Myths on his Facebook page warning that cooking grease and garbage of any kind (i.e. food packaging, candy wrappers, straws, etc.) should not be flushed or put down a drain. Grease should be left to solidify in a container and then tossed in the garbage can.
One major problem is wipes of any kind. "No Wipes in the Pipes!," the message said. Even though some packaging may say the wipes are flushable, they are the #1 cause of clogged pipes.
Other items that should never be flushed include:
Feminine products such as pads, panty liners and tampons
Medications (over-the-counter or prescribed)
Household chemicals
Chewing tobacco and cigarettes
Band-Aids
Disposable gloves
Dental floss, flossers and toothbrushes
Keep in mind that homeowners are responsible for both water and sewer lines from the point where they exit the home and connect to the City's sewer system.
