Substation fire leaves thousands in the dark in Chemung County

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Many areas are without power in Chemung County on Thursday after reports of a fire at an electrical substation.

According to an 18 News reporter at the scene, a fire broke out at an electrical substation in Horseheads on Kalen Circuit just off Ridge Road. Crews from local fire departments and NYSEG crews are at the scene assessing the situation.

As a result of the fire, NYSEG is currently reporting 3,341 customers without power in the Village of Horseheads, Town of Veteran, Town of Horseheads, Town of Catlin, Town of Catherine, Town of Cayuta, Village of Millport and the Town of Erin.

The current restoration time for the power in these areas is currently 3:30 p.m., but that time is subject to change. 18 News will monitor this situation and report when the power is back on.
