Don't let the frost frostbite: How to safeguard your plants through the cooler months

As the cooler months come in, and you start to feel a chill, your plants do too.

ABC13 headed over to Gary's Garden Center in Lynchburg to see what you can do to keep the frost off of your plants.

What you don't want to do is just cover it up with a piece of plastic, drape it over it and just let it be laying over top of it," owner, Nelson Garner, said. "Plastic actually has no insulating value whatsoever. The plastic can actually freeze and adhere to the plant and that could do actually more damage than the frost itself.

If you have to use plastic to cover up your plants, Garner has a tip for you.

"What you want to do is if you are going to use plastic, keep it elevated so it's not flat on the plant and leave a good space in between that will allow heat to radiate out of the ground," he said.

Garner said your best bet to cover your plant is to use something made of cloth.

Have an old sheet, towel, quilt, something that has a cloth base that you can just lay right over the plant and that can lay right on top, because the cloth won't freeze or adhere to the cloth that way," he said.

However, Garner said covering your plant only works when the temperatures are above 32. Once we get below freezing, you need to think about bringing them inside.
