Downtown Rapid City statues dressed for another winter
Beginning Friday, the statues of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt Thomas Jefferson and all 43 presidents will take on a warmer, seasonal look.
Friday marks the 10th season when winter apparel items can be placed on the downtown Rapid City presidential statues. During wintery conditions, items such as gloves, scarves, ear muffs, hats, coats, even socks, are collected from the statues for those in need of the items.
As the traditional holiday season of giving gets underway, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun is encouraging the public to not only place a winter apparel item on a downtown statue, but also to share their generosity with community organizations that assist those in need throughout the year.
"Rapid City is such a giving and generous community," Salamun said. "Whether it's a call for diapers, winter clothing items, food, toys, helping veterans, Halloween candy, or toiletry items, our community steps up and gives. As we approach this season of giving, I encourage citizens to continue their strong spirit of giving, whether its placing a stocking cap on a statue or donating to organizations and efforts that assist those in need in our community."
Mayor Steve Allender authorized the placement of winter apparel items on downtown statues in November 2015 and the City Council approved a resolution in April 2016 allowing items to be placed on the statues annually from Nov. 15 to March 15. The public has responded in impressive fashion each winter season, keeping the 43 downtown presidential statues – even the statues of First Dogs Barney and Liberty – attired in various forms of colorful and warm winter apparel items.
Often, the winter apparel items disappear soon after placement.
Many church, youth and other groups and organizations often organize efforts to place several items on the statues.
