Hot Press editor Niall Stokes praised the finale, saying "All six artists were superb, reflecting the wonderful diversity of what is happening creatively and musically all over the country. I think it's fair to say that every one of those acts was – and is – a winner. But particular congratulations to Calum Agnew and his brilliant young band who delivered such a powerful performance. We're really looking forward to seeing Calum work with Camden Recording Studios and the Rubyworks label now."

In addition to Calum, the finalists included Bobbi Arlo (FM104), Asophonics (KCLR FM), Mia Black (Shannonside/Northern Sound), Jessica Brett (Tipp FM) and Projective (Cork's 96FM). Each act brought their own unique sounds and styles, making for an evening filled with outstanding performances. Adding to the incredible performances by the six finalists, the event also featured a standout performance by special guest Tolü Makay.

Agnew, who was already recognised as a rising star in the local music scene, captivated the judges with his soulful pop sound characterised with his flickering percussion, technicolour soul, rich R&B layerings and smooth vocals. Since his debut headline in The Beehive in London in 2021, he has performed in many venues throughout Ireland including an impressive set in Whelan's Main Room in March.

President Higgins extended his congratulations to Calum, recognising his enormous potential, he said "There is so much extraordinary musical talent in Ireland right now, as was confirmed so emphatically, when independent radio stations all over Ireland chose their own Local Hero, as part of Irish Music Month. We are in a very special moment here in Ireland, with brilliant young, creative artists like all six finalists delivering works of remarkable imagination, quality and strength. Calum Agnew is one of those admirable talents. A truly committed musician who has been writing songs ever since he was a young child."

"A New Local Hero" is an important feature of Irish Music Month, an initiative of Hot Press and the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, which is funded by Coimisiún na Meán, valued in excess of €100,000 for Irish artists.
