WOODVILLE, Texas (KTRE) - East Texas VFWs are banding together to help hurricane victims in North Carolina and Florida.

"What are we doing, as a national organization of veterans to support our fellow veterans, one of our core missions, and be involved in our community," said Woodville VFW Post 2033 Michael King.

VFW District 19 consists of 11 posts across the East Texas region. Each post will become a donation site and Post 2033 in Woodville will act as a central hub. King said they will collect all of the donated items and ship them to North Carolina or Florida.

"If we come together as a group, we're stronger than just the 51 of us here at this post," he said.

According to King, there are several North Carolina VFW Posts directly impacted by Hurricane Helene.

"[ I asked] 'what do y'all need? What's your biggest need? And the response was, and I'm not making this up, the response back was 'we need everything'," said King.

The VFW will accept gently used clothing items.

Jackets, coats

Children clothing, toys

"Those are the items we're looking at that we can consolidate here and then get shipped up there," said King.

At the Woodville VFW, two large tents in hopes of filling the space with dozens of donation boxes.

"That hopefully we'll be able to fill like a semi-trailer full of supplies," said King.
