El Paso ISD receives $1 million grant for security, aims to curb mass shootings

The El Paso Independent School District has been awarded a $1 million federal grant to improve school security.

US Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) made the announcement Monday breaking down where the money will go to hopefully reduce school mass shootings:

  • Prevention and crisis response training for law enforcement and school resource officers
  • Firearm safety training for community members
  • Improvements in data collection, technology, and information-sharing
  • According to Cornyn, part of the grant comes from the U.S. Department of Justice's STOP School Violence Program and was approved by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, legislation signed into law on June 25, 2022, and spearheaded by Cornyn.

Speaking about the bipartisan act, Cornyn invoked Uvalde, hinting that the country needs to learn from that tragedy,

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is about mental health, school safety, and ensuring that the tragedy that struck Uvalde was not in vain. I'm grateful this law is giving schools across our state the resources needed to keep students, staff, and teachers safe.

Cornyn serves on the Senate Finance, Intelligence, and Judiciary Committees.
