Election Day live updates from Waynesboro
It's Election Day in America.
Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
All Virginians can cast a ballot today for president, U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives and will have the chance to weigh in on a statewide referendum regarding a proposed tax exemption for the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in the line of duty.
Former President Donald Trump is running for a third time as the Republican presidential nominee, this time against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
In the statewide Senate race, two-term incumbent Tim Kaine, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Hung Cao.
In the 6th District, which runs north and south up and down the Shenandoah Valley, incumbent Republican Ben Cline, first elected in 2018, is running against Democrat Ken Mitchell and independent Robby Wells. Cline remains the odds-on favorite in a reliably red district ranked as the second-strongest GOP bastion among Virginia's 11 congressional districts, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.
In Waynesboro, six candidates are seeking three City Council seats. In each race, an independent faces off with a Republican. In Ward A, independent Lorie Jean Strother is competing against Republican David Goetze. In Ward B, independent Terry Short is running against Republican Will Flory. And independent Bobby Henderson is competing against Republican Jeremy Sloat for the city's at-large seat. Notable among the races, Henderson, a former councilman and mayor, is looking to return to Council after a two-year absence.
There are also three Waynesboro School Board seats up for grabs, and with only three announced candidates, everyone is running unopposed. Incumbents Erika Smith and Diana Williams are both running for reelection. They are joined by Nigel Stewart, who at 23 is the youngest candidate in any city election this year. All school board candidates run as independents.
In nearby Staunton, five independent candidates are seeking four seats on City Council: Adam Campbell, Dan Gunnells, Blake Shepherd, Corrie Park and Jeff Overholtzer. There are also three independent candidates running unopposed for school board seats: Michele Kielty, Joann Jeter and Ron Ramsey. All voting in Staunton city elections is at large.
