Election Day races could shift balance of power in Congress

N.Nguyen33 min ago

On Election Day, control of both the House and Senate hangs in the balance, impacting the president's ability to fulfill campaign promises and deciding what legislation is brought to Capitol Hill and, ultimately, what ends up on the president's desk.

Currently, Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate, but that makeup will likely change. Of the 34 Senate seats up for grabs in the 2024 election, a dozen could flip parties.

One race in Ohio between incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican challenger Bernie Moreno, for example, is listed as a true toss-up by 270 to Win.

There are also close races in swing states like Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

"It just so happens that all the close races right now are for seats are currently held by Democrats," political analyst Marc Sandalow said. "Which means Republicans really aren't going to go down any."

In the House, 23 of the 435 races are too close to predict.

There are close races for Republican-held seats in Arizona, California, Iowa, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

There are also close elections for seats held by Democrats in Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

The House is currently made up of 220 Republicans and 212 Democrats, with three vacant seats.
