Elks Mobile Dental Unit brings free care to veterans in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Over the past two weeks, a Joplin organization has played host to a mobile unit, specializing in dental care for veterans and those with special needs.

The time spent at the Joplin Elks Lodge was about more than just seeing a dentist, it was a way of saying "thank you" to those who served our nation.

"I spent a lot of time in warfare, so when I ended up getting back, my mind wasn't right," said Dustin Hester, US Army veteran.

US Army veteran Dustin Hester says readjusting to civilian life took a financial toll.

"So now I don't have the financial means for something like this, and the military flat refuses to cover it," said Hester.

"This" dental work wouldn't be possible without the Elks Mobile Dental Unit, staffed by a team dedicated to providing free care to physically and mentally disabled patients, and veterans.

"We've had some great contacts with the VA agency here, and they expressed the need for dental in this area, so we said, 'let's go,'" said Stephanie Scott, dental hygienist and program coordinator for Elks Mobile Dental Unit.

Dustin says there was some apprehension about coming to his appointment....

"I've been in firefights. I couldn't tell you how many engagements I've been in, and there's not much that scares me more. Needles terrify me," said Hester.

But finding out Dr. Robert Beck, the man who would be using that needle, was a brother in arms.

"US Navy," said Dr. Robert Beck, MO Elks Dental Unit.

Made the experience much easier.

"Because that camaraderie is there. You tend to trust them a little more," said Hester.

Dr. Beck says knowing he's there for a fellow veteran makes the work all the more important.

"When you've served in the military, you form a bond of understanding, what it's like to be under the umbrella of the armed forces," said Beck.

Dustin's dental work was completely paid for by the Elks... something he says was at first hard to believe.

"I'm extremely appreciative of these folks, because this is something you just don't find every day," said Hester.

And to his fellow veterans, who may be in need of dental work.

"I would definitely recommend it. No hesitation whatsoever," said Hester.
