Erie County Executive criticizes board of elections over election fumbles

The election is over, but the Erie County Board of Elections continues to be under fire on Wednesday.

This time it's Erie County Executive Brenton Davis who's criticizing the board of elections officials.

But the chair of the board of elections has his own harsh words for Davis.

"At a time when we should be reaffirming people's feelings of security and secure and fair elections, they failed," Davis said.

Davis called out the board of elections saying they dropped the ball repeatedly leading up to and even following the election. He cited a lawsuit over mail-in ballots that didn't reach voters in a timely manner.

"You have 13,000 mail-in ballots. There are a lot of folks who didn't get to vote who wished to cast a vote and requested one. To me that's 100% unacceptable," he explained.

Davis added the fumbles continued on election night when it took hours for early returns to make it to the county website after polls closed.

"It's kind of strange when my colleagues in Colorado you know have results or even colleagues in Nevada have results and they're in two or three different time zones away and Erie County is at zero percent reporting," he said.

Davis went on to say the board of elections failed at every turn and he places responsibility squarely on the shoulders of its chairman, Erie County Councilman Andre Horton.

Horton responded that the Erie County Board of Elections is in fact the gold standard.

"I'm very, very proud of the work that we did to accomplish this election in the way that we did under seemingly unsurmountable, overwhelming obstacles," said Andre Horton, chairman of the Erie County Board of Elections.

And Horton said Davis was one of those obstacles.

"He would not provide the IT department to be on hand as they have been in years past. He brought obstacles in our way. Made us jump through hoops for every request. It's unacceptable," said

One thing Davis and Horton agree on? They both said partisan politics have no place in the administration of elections.
