HOUSTON — Houston firefighters are working to contain large brush fires burning most of the day in Addicks Reservoir.

HFD said it received reports of smoke in the area between Eldridge Parkway and Highway 6 around 12:30 p.m. Sunday. They will be on the scene overnight into Monday.

A staging area for Houston firefighters is set up along Eldridge Parkway just north of I-10.

On Sunday afternoon, the district fire chief said there were several large columns of smoke coming from multiple fires in the woods between Eldridge Parkway, Clay Road and Highway 6.

At least 50 firefighters were trying to prevent the spots from growing. The Texas Forest Association and Harris County Precinct 4 resources were on site.

The fire may have started along a trail but the cause is still unclear right now. HFD said they have two bulldozers and 3 ATVs to assist.

About 20 to 40 acres have burned and a 100-acre fire line has been cut to prevent it from jumping.

Here's what residents need to know.

"Avoid this area for the next few days, make sure you're not in any area around the fire break or within the fire break, we want to make sure people stay out so we can contain this fire, make sure it's out," District 78 Chief Joel Crenshaw said.

The Houston Fire Department is working with the Texas Forest Service to put out the fire. HFD said there was no reaction on air quality meters. The weather could be a factor in fires like this occurring.

"With the dry and aired weather it is definitely going to be picking up the possibility of fires like this, anywhere where we have urban interface like this um, any little thing can start a fire and it can grow rapidly," Crenshaw said.
