Gareth Southgate says he wants his players to return to the "mental stage" that helped them overcome Slovakia in the last 16 as they prepare for Saturday's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

Jude Bellingham's acrobatic stoppage-time equaliser breathed new life into a side seemingly heading home from Germany, and they capitalised early in extra-time as Harry Kane's header helped secure a 2-1 win.

"We showed great resilience and great character to keep going right until the end, and I think we deserved a draw in the 90 minutes," England manager Southgate told Uefa.

"When you get the goal so early in extra time, you're able to be in charge of things a little more.

"We have to get ourselves back to the mental stage we were in before the game with (Slovakia).

"Where whatever it takes to win, you've got to be ready to go. You've got to be ready to go right to the depths again."

Everyone has their own ideas on who should be in England's starting XI - you can even have a go using BBC Sport's selector - but ultimately that responsibility falls on the broad shoulders of Gareth Southgate.

The former England defender has led his nation to a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final, and was a penalty shootout away from Euro 2020 glory.

'Dangerous' for England to change tactics - Gelson Fernandes England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

Simon Stone BBC Sport

I have been speaking to former Switzerland and Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes about Saturday's Euro 2024 quarter-final.

The 37-year-old is a veteran of five major tournaments, and famously scored the goal that gave Switzerland victory against eventual winners Spain in the first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He questions Gareth Southgate's plan to switch to three at the back for the last-eight clash.

"Would you change the tactical aspect when you are already in the quarter-final?" he said. "It's quite dangerous forme.

"At that level you don't test. Usually you can do that infriendly games. That is when you can change things. At that level it'stricky.

"I don't want to judge Gareth Southgate because he is thecoach, theonly thing I would say is, as a player, it's better to have certain thingswhich you are sure of; if you compensate from right to left, or you push up, oryou come out, when you go two v two.

"In the final round itâ€TMs betterto know what you're doing, because otherwise it can be tricky and on the pitchyou don't have time to react and to adjust. It might be too late.

"But that'snot my problem. It's England's problem."

Shaw to provide balance to England defence? England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

Gareth Southgate admitted when including Luke Shaw in his provisional squad that it was a "long shot" , but clearly hoped the left-back would return to play some part in the tournament after deciding not to take another left-footed defender to Germany.

One of the key reasons Shaw continues to be in the conversation, as the Times reports, is that the England manager is considering a switch in tactics for Saturday's quarter-final against Switzerland - from a back four to a back three.

Shaw could bring much-needed balance to either formation, as a left-sided centre-back, left wing-back or left full-back.

The Three Lions boss must decide on a replacement for suspended centre-back Marc Guehi, with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa talked about as the most likely to come in on the left side of a back three, but that is a position he has not regularly played for his club side.

What do you think? Thumbs up if you would consider playing Luke Shaw, or thumbs down if you think it would be too much of a risk...

Slovakia win 'emotional turning point' - Stones England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

We will start off with a look at today's national newspapers, the vast majority of which have taken their lead from John Stones' thoughtful interview in yesterday's England news conference.

As BBC Sport reported, the Manchester City defender said that the Three Lions' dramatic last-16 comeback win against Slovakia could prove an "emotional turning point" in their bid for Euro 2024 glory.

Stones, speaking as England prepared for Saturday's quarter-final against Switzerland, said success in that game, when he admitted thinking he and his team-mates were on their way home, will "change a lot of things".

"It shows that unity, and togetherness, as a team," said the 30-year-old defender, referring to Jude Bellingham's last-gasp equaliser and subsequent 2-1 win after extra-time.

"When you have done those things, you can believe you can do it better, and when it gets tough you can always recap to these moments."
