Evansville invited to attend public hearing on lead pipes

M.Nguyen6 hr ago
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) is inviting the public to join a conversation in regard to lead service lines in its system.

The EWSU says some private water service lines installed before 1987 could contain lead. New Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mandate the removal of all service lines containing lead by October 16, 2034. In 2025, the EWSU will investigate the materials of unknown service lines to determine if they contain lead. The EWSU says its current priority is to sample and test drinking water taps at all childcare facilities and elementary schools constructed prior to 2014.

EWSU says it will hold a public information and communication session on November 18 at Sunrise Pump Station, located at 1200 Waterworks Road, at 2:30 p.m., to begin a discussion of how the Utility will deal with private lead service lines in the future.

Officials say people are asked to come ready to ask questions and to learn more about lead and drinking water in the community. People can also submit their questions and comments in advance here . The session may be viewed live here .

An emperor penguin found malnourished far from its Antarctic home on the Australian south coast is being cared for by a wildlife expert, a government department said Monday. The adult male was found on Nov. 1 on a popular tourist beach in the town of Denmark in temperate southwest Australia — about 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) north of the icy waters off the Antarctic coast, according to a statement from the Western Australia state's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The largest penguin species has never been reported in Australia before, University of Western Australia research fellow Belinda Cannell said, though some had reached New Zealand, nearly all of which is further south than Western Australia.

STORY: :: "For those of us dedicated to climate action, last week's outcome in the United States is obviously bitterly disappointing.":: John Podesta, U.S. climate envoy "In January, we're going to inaugurate a president whose relationship to climate change is captured by the words 'hoax' and 'fossil fuels'. He's vowed to dismantle our environmental safeguards and once again withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement.""While the United States federal government under Donald Trump may put climate action on the back burner, the work to contain climate change is going to continue in the United States with commitment and passion and belief.":: Baku, Azerbaijan :: November 11, 2024During the news conference Podesta also spoke about China, saying the country has an obligation to develop a plan to cut emissions that is aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement goal to limit planetary warming to 1.5 degrees Celcius above pre-industrial levels. The annual U.N. climate summit began on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, with many country delegations concerned Trump's victory in U.S. presidential elections would hinder progress to limit planetary warming.Trump has promised to again remove the United States, the world's biggest historic greenhouse gas emitter, from international climate cooperation and maximise the country's already record-high fossil fuel production.

STORY: :: Climate activist Greta Thunberg joins Georgia protesters, calling out 'greenwashing' at COP29 in Baku:: November 11, 2024:: Tbilisi, Georgia:: Greta Thunberg, Swedish Environmental Activist"The climate crisis is an existential crisis. 2024 is on track to become the hottest year ever recorded, and last year global greenhouse gas emissions have risen all time high. And in this moment that the U.N. triple C (UNCCC - United Nations Climate Change Conference) is hosting, yet another climate meeting in an authoritarian petro- state (Azerbaijan) is beyond absurd.""I am not going there because of this extreme hypocrisy. These co-processes are not leading to any meaningful change. The emissions keep on increasing and we keep moving in the wrong direction, even though the science and those affected by the climate crisis have been warning us for decades about the consequences. Whatever the people in power are doing it, they are doing it wrong because this is only leading us further, deeper into... deeper injustices and a climate catastrophe."Thunberg criticized the lack of meaningful climate changes and expressed support for the Georgian struggle for democracy and justice.Thunberg became a prominent climate campaigner after staging weekly protests in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018.Earlier on Monday Thunberg stood in front of the Azerbaijan embassy in Tbilisi to support Azerbaijani journalist Afgan Sadigov, joining protesters in a demonstration organized by his family.
