Exhibit honors former State Rep. Alyce Griffin Clarke

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – An exhibit at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center in Jackson will honor former State Rep. Alyce Griffin Clarke.

The exhibit is called "Faces of Alyce Griffin Clarke." A bust of Clarke will be unveiled at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be open to the public.

Clarke was the first African American woman elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives. She served District 69 for 40 years, from 1984-2024. In 2024, she became the first African American and the first woman to have a portrait permanently on display in the Mississippi State Capitol since joining the Union in 1817.

In 2018, the Mississippi Legislature passed the Alyce G. Clarke's Mississippi Lottery Law, which helps fund education and infrastructure improvements in the state.

The exhibition will be on display through March 31, 2025.

An eagled-eyed husband and wife were sailing in Hawaii when they spotted mysterious objects in the distance. Camila and Ryan Sullivan found five scuba divers drifting at sea. They told their rescuers that they were on a diving excursion. When they surfaced, they realized that they drifted away and their dive boat was nowhere to be found. The couple tried to pull them to safety but the sea was too rough. They radioed the U.S. Coast Guard. Twenty minutes later, help finally arrived.

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. In the Aug. 29 email, Maricopa County Judge Bruce Cohen lamented that he didn't speak out when Harris was called a "DEI hire," believes that white men must speak out against unfair treatment of women, and raised a historical lesson from the Holocaust about the need to speak up when people are attacked. Cohen didn't specify who made the comment regarding Harris.

The president of Tuskegee University in Alabama announced Monday that the school is being closed to outsiders and that its security chief has been fired in the wake of a mass shooting Sunday on campus. Mark Brown, president and CEO of the historically black university, announced the changes as the investigation of the mass shooting continued Monday and the local sheriff warned those responsible for the shooting that "we are going to find you." "The Tuskegee University community is heartbroken by what happened on our campus Sunday morning," Brown said during a news conference Monday afternoon.
