KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former Kansas City, Missouri Police detective serving time for involuntary manslaughter has now been found liable in a wrongful death suit.

A U.S. district judge this week found Erik DeValkenaere violated Cameron Lamb's constitutional rights when he entered Lamb's backyard in 2019.

According to court documents, DeValkenaere bypassed and removed barricades intended to stop people from coming into the backyard. The judge did not rule whether the shooting was excessive force, and did not immediately decide on damages.

Another judge found DeValkenaere guilty of involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in 2021.

DeValkenaere is serving a six year sentence in the shooting death of Lamb but Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has stated he's considering a possible pardon.

Earlier this year, the Missouri Supreme Court denied DeValkenaere's request to transfer his case.
