Experts offer mental health tips after election

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Whether you celebrate or condemn the election outcomes, there's a lot of emotion wrapped up in the results. Experts say it's important to prioritize mental health.

It's a blustery day in Burlington as Tim Keenan wraps up a four-mile run. He's clearing his head after days of election tension. "Just kind of processing how I'm actually feeling, maybe a little bit frustrated or challenged or saddened, and being active seems to be the best way for me to kind of process that and sit with it," said Keenan.

Vermonters are sifting through all kinds of feelings post-election. Mental health experts say it's normal to be overwhelmed after a contentious presidential race like this.

"It's not really too different from kind of a grief process of people sort of moving stages around that surprise, shock, celebration, excitement, depending kind of where you're at," said Jeffrey Rettew with the University of Vermont.

It can be hard to go about daily life while processing those emotions.

But some, like Carla Francis and her husband who have two young kids and a dog to care for, find surprising solace in their typical chaos. "We're so busy taking care of them that we are kind of separated from the news anyway, so that's been really helpful," said Francis.

If you're not quite there yet Rettew says reaching for simple tasks that give you a sense of control can be a big help. "Break it down into smaller pieces, whether that's cleaning a particular thing in your house or making your bed."

He says disconnecting from social media for moments to move your body, breath, and journal are also good stress relievers.

And above all sharing your feelings with like-minded individuals can be cathartic a reminder that you're not alone. "We're wired as social animals. We're wired for connection, so being sure to connect with the people around you that are supportive."

If you're struggling to process emotions on your own, experts recommend reaching out to a mental health professional near you.
