Students helping veterans
SCRANTON, Pa. — Valhalla Veteran's Services is a non-profit in Scranton that helps people who have served our country.
"They are there to serve first responders, veterans, active service members, and their families for mental health services, especially in suicide prevention. They do all this counseling for little to no cost to the people they serve," Zamarra Varbel said.
Some students from Penn State Scranton are teaming up with Valhalla Veteran's Services to plan its biggest fundraiser of the year. Tomorrow is the group's Fall Ball. The event starts at 5 p.m. at Fiorelli's in Peckville and is open to the public.
"We have a huge basket raffle we're really excited for. We collected them through small businesses throughout the area. I think there's over 60 baskets this year," Ava Compton said.
The students say it's a good opportunity for them to work with veterans and first responders.
"First of all, we're helping our community and building these connections with people we would have never met before. And second, it's giving us this real world experience that is sometimes hard to get in a classroom setting," Emma Bannon said.
