DULUTH, Minn — Minnesota's recent destructive flash flooding had Senator Amy Klobuchar touring hard-hit Cook and Biwabik.on Wednesday. But before that, Klobuchar made a stop in Duluth with Mayor Roger Reinert.

They chose the press event to be held at the Lake Superior Zoo. You may remember how in 2012, flood waters tore through the Zoo's grounds during the historic Northland Flash Flood of 2012.

Klobuchar said, "While Southern Minnesota is dealing with current severe flooding, she wants to make sure Northern Minnesota understands the government has their backs, too. The reasons I wanted to be up here was just to make the point, we still know that there are places in northern Minnesota that greatly suffered," said Klobuchar. "And we don't want to forget that as we see the drama of what's going on in southern Minnesota, there is hope. And that hope is the immediate and getting recovery help."

Klobuchar said the city of Duluth's rebuild and flood mitigation efforts after the 2012 flood can provide an example to other cities. Mayor Reinert agreed, "So I do just want to emphasize what Senator Klobuchar said, for those communities that are really struggling, be hopeful, be forward-leaning, be thinking about what your infrastructure needs to look like 50 years from now, given what we're seeing in terms of the trend on environmental events. So it's actually a really good point."

FEMA has issued federal disaster declarations for 22 Minnesota counties. Governor Tim Walz says 20 other counties are under review to receive federal assistance.
