FEMA to begin winding down operations in Spartanburg Co.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – FEMA will begin to wind down operations in Spartanburg County as the agency prepares to more effectively assist other parts of the state hit by Hurricane Helene.
"As we know, the biggest number of survivors, or people affected, was Greenville County, and then Spartanburg," said Gabriel Gonzalez, FEMA Public Information Officer for the Northwest region of South Carolina.
Gonzalez said FEMA is processing between 3,000-5,000 assistance applications a day in South Carolina, recently surpassing more than 410,000 applications.
FEMA says it will shut down the Spartanburg County-based Disaster Recovery Center in mid-November.
"This was strategically placed here because its a pretty, very access easy location. It will be open until November 15," Gonzalez said. "It will be up in the air if it will extended to a later date."
You can still apply for FEMA assistance even after Nov. 15. Gonzalez reminded applicants to ensure all documentation is correct before submitting, or your application may be denied.
"[If] you put your birthdate wrong, you put a wrong number on your social security application, you fail to upload one document, that's why I highly encourage all survivors, please come by the DRC," said Gonzalez.
