Fernandez, Holman flip seats to advance to SC Statehouse
RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Republicans flipped two South Carolina State House seats during Tuesday night's election. Tom Fernandez and Harriet Holman will now represent areas in Berkeley and Dorchester counties in the General Assembly.
"One of the first things I want to do is I want to ensure that I listen to my constituents, and I want to ensure that I have their priorities in mind when I get to the Statehouse so that I can make an impact," said Harriet Holman, who will represent District 102.
Holman currently serves on the Dorchester County Council. She is a retired Lt. Col. with the United States Army and comes to the state's capitol with a focus.
"Cutting taxes," she said. "Cutting taxes- you know, taxes right now are way too high for the American people, and people are having a very difficult time even when they go to the grocery store. They're making not enough money and they're paying too much in taxes."
Tom Fernandez is an entrepreneur, lawyer, and retired South Carolina State Guardsman.
"I'm humbled. I'm grateful that the voters of District 39 had enough confidence and not just myself, but my wife, to actually represent them before the government," he said.
He also has a focus.
"Fix all the infringements that Washington has made into South Carolina. Fix the economy and help get people back to work help businesses to continue to thrive."
Fernandez defeated Democratic State Senator Vernon Stephens in District 39.
"This seat, South Carolina District 39, has never had a Republican in it before. And to see that it's actually flipped is a clear indication that voters were upset and were ready for a real change," he added.
Holman defeated Democratic State Representative Joe Jefferson in District 102.
"It's a new day, and constituents were heard this time. They had options. So, they have decided that they want someone that is going to represent them throughout the entire district and so that's me, Harriet Holman."
Holman and Fernandez are set to be sworn into office on Veterans Day, November 11th.
