LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Expected Today and Tonight

A powerful weather system is moving into our region, bringing a significant threat of strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. This has prompted us to declare a urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.

Primary Threats:

  • Damaging Winds: Gusts of 60 mph or higher are possible, capable of knocking down trees and power lines and causing property damage.
  • Large Hail: Some storms may produce quarter-sized hail, potentially damaging crops and vehicles.
  • Local High Water Issues: Heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and urban centers.
  • Isolated Tornado: While chances aren't high, we could still see something isolated develop.
  • Rainy Pattern Persists:

Rain will remain a consistent part of our forecast through next week, with showers and thunderstorms developing daily. While this rain is much-needed, excessive amounts could exacerbate flood concerns.

    Tropical Influence:

By the end of the week, showers will be associated with the remnants of Helene, which is forecast to intensify into a major hurricane. This tropical system will pump hefty amounts of moisture into Kentucky, potentially alleviating lingering rainfall deficits.

    Flood Concerns Heightened:

While beneficial rainfall is anticipated, the sheer volume of moisture could become too much of a good thing. Prolonged heavy rain may heighten flood concerns, especially in saturated soil areas and swollen waterways.

    Preparation is Key:

    Take necessary precautions today:

  • Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.
  • Charge devices and have backup power sources ready.
  • Plan for potential disruptions in travel and daily activities.
  • Stay informed and follow evacuation instructions if issued.
  • Take care of each other!
