First of many measurable snowfalls at Bristol Mountain

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WROC) – With those colder temperatures and lingering showers we had earlier this morning, Bristol Mountain saw its first snowfall of the season. While Rochester may be a bit behind in seeing tis first flakes, Bristol Mountain is actually right on schedule. "It's that time of the year where it's cold up top and not as cold at the base so we have snow up top from last night no snow at the base right now but we're right on track so usually we see kind of our first flurries around the end of October, but we really don't see that first snow sticking until mid November," says Steve Fuller, who is the vice president of Bristol Mountain. However, Mother Nature's snow does not complete the job for making enough snow for trails to open. "We don't get a lot of natural snow and New York and Rochester region so that's really why our state of the art still making system is so important and so integral to really know to boost what mother nature gives us be able to add a lot of snow depth open a lot of trails here first mountain fast as we take advantage of the cold temperatures," says Fuller. When it comes to making snow, Bristol Mountain has their equipment ready to go. "We two different systems here at the mountain we have a it's called the air water system and that accounts for compressed air and also we have some some water that we also shoot through these guns and then we also have what we call fan gun technology, and that just has on board compressors on those guns where it shoots the water out so we have those two different styles. They're both very helpful depending on what the temperatures are. Depends on the width of the trail. Depends on a bunch of different factors," Fuller says. Before deciding to make the snow, Fuller and his staff will look not only at the air temperature, but the humidity levels as well. "For us here at Bristol, it's not just about what the ambient temperature is. We also look for wet bulb temperature so that really takes account not only just the outside temperature but the humidity as well and so as we see that temperature really dropped that wet bulb temperature drop well below freezing that's what we can actually start to make snow here at Bristol Mountain," says Fuller.
