ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – First responders laced up their running shoes this weekend to pay tribute to the four fallen first responders who lost their lives two years ago in the Metro 2 helicopter crash.

In July 2022, Undersheriff Larry Koren, BCSO Lieutenant Fred Beers, Deputy Michael Levisons, and BCFD Rescue Specialist Matthew King were on board the helicopter that crashed right outside of Las Vegas, New Mexico, after assisting with a wildfire in the area.

On Saturday, teams made up of first responders from different agencies ran a 67-mile relay in their honor, starting in Santa Fe and ending in Downtown Albuquerque.

"We have mile markers that honor each officer [who] died in the Metro 2 crash, then we are raising money for our Capeless Heroes Foundation," said Meredith Autry, the founder of Capeless Heroes Foundation.

The foundation is a nonprofit that offers services to all first responders, including firefighters, police, medical, and military.
