Flags ordered to be flown at half-staff for late senator, Elba native
ELBA, Ala (WDHN) — Governor Kay Ivey has ordered flags across southeast Alabama to be flown at half-staff beginning Thursday afternoon in honor of State Senator Jimmy Holley.
Holley died on Monday, November 4, at the Elba Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 80.
Flags in Alabama State Senate District 31, encompassing Coffee, Dale, Pike, and Covington counties, and on the grounds of the State Capital Complex in Montgomery, were lowered to half-staff beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Flags will be kept at half-staff through sundown on Friday, November 8.
The Coffee County native was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1974, serving that seat for 20 years.

In 1998, Holley was elected to serve District 31 in the Alabama Senate, serving 6 terms before retiring in 2023.
"Senator Jimmy Holley's remarkable 44 years of combined legislative service not only ensured he was a strong and effective representative for his constituents in Coffee, Covington, Dale, and Pike counties, but also enabled him to accumulate a vast knowledge of the process which afforded him great influence," Gov. Ivey wrote in a release. "During my time as Lt. Governor, Senator Holley always made his presence felt in the shaping of legislation. It was an honor to work with him for the people of Alabama. He was a true statesman and will be missed."
