Food drive to fight holiday hunger
(WBRE/WYOU) — Thousands of families will have what they need for a Thanksgiving fest this year, thanks to a food drive.
The Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank held its 45th annual food drive in Hazelton.
They handed out more than 2,500 meals Saturday, all part of their goal to serve more than ten thousand families this season.
Each family received a turkey, fresh produce, and pantry staples they needed to prepare a holiday feast.
Hundreds of volunteers and local businesses teamed up to make sure no family goes without for Thanksgiving.
"It's an absolutely wonderful feeling, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, so just being out here helping to serve families so that they're able to have a meal during the holidays as well is just a wonderful experience," says Mary Ellen Spellman, Weinberg Food Bank Director.
Organizers say the food drive would not be possible without the support of the community.
The Weinberg Food Bank will host its final Thanksgiving distribution event next weekend also in Luzerne County.
