Sunday with Steph McGovern: ‘Two Yorkshire puddings. I’m a purist’
C.Chen1 hr ago
Up early? Sunday is the one morning I don't get out of bed early. I still wake up early, because we've got a five-year-old. But she comes into bed with us.Breakfast in bed? Very much so. I don't drink tea or coffee, but it's normally me who gets up and makes a cuppa for my Mrs and an apple juice for my little girl, plus I'll bring pancakes, fruit or whatever they want. Nothing lavish, but I put it on one of those granny trays and come upstairs like a waitress. Then I get back into bed and we have a leisurely morning.Morning routine? I normally take my daughter to a gymnastics soft-play centre at 10.30am. It's full of hungover parents watching their kids launch themselves into foam pits. If yours forces you to join in, God forbid you should ever land in the foam pit, because it's the hardest place to get out of. You'll lose a sock trying and you'll flash your boob at someone.Sunday roast? Yes, with two Yorkshire puddings, and I'm a purist. I don't want anything fancy, like pumpkin-spiced red cabbage or paprika cauliflower cheese. I want it to be proper. My partner's a brilliant cook so she'll make it or we'll go to a local carvery.Rainy afternoon? My daughter loves crafting. Recently, she wanted to make the characters from a song about speckled frogs, so we had make frogs. Then she wanted a fly, too, which was a real stretch of my artistic skills. It's such a change from before I had her. When I was on BBC Breakfast, Sunday was about getting ready for work the next day and often that meant catching a train somewhere in the afternoon so I could interview someone. I used to hate Sundays. Now they're lovely.Evening entertainment? We've got lights that give our kitchen a disco effect. We love Pink and Taylor Swift and my partner is into Belinda Carlisle. So we'll do that sometimes – have a dance – then read my little girl a story. When she's in bed, we'll open a bottle of red and watch a film or read.
