There's a split happening in San Diego – on the coast, residents can expect a blanket of fog, while inland it's more like a wall of heat.

Hot temperatures – 10 to 20 degrees above normal – remain in the forecast for valleys, mountains and deserts through early next week. Daily records remain possible for mountains and lower desert areas, according to the National Weather Service .

Highs in the San Diego valleys will reach the 90s in the west and high 90s to low 100s in the east.

The mountains, below 6000 feet, are set to see temps in the mid 80s to mid 90s, in the high desert, from 96 to 102 and in the low desert, from 105 to 113.

Some of the likely hotter areas – Alpine, Anza-Borrego, Escondido and Ramona.

Meanwhile, locally dense fog is expected near and off shore, at beaches in San Diego and Oceanside and in western valleys through Monday. Visibility of less than 1 mile is possible.

Forecasters see highs through the weekend at the beaches reaching the mid to upper 70s, while along the coast, they will be in the upper 70s to mid 80s.

Temperatures will gradually fall, returning to near normal by the end of the coming week.
