ASHEVILLE, NC. ( FOX 56 ) — The "Why Not? Tour" was long awaited for Sturgill Simpson fans, marking the Kentucky native's return after a three-year hiatus.

The tour was slated for 28 dates across the nation but as the Oct. 21 Asheville stop neared, North Carolina found itself in crisis following Hurricane Helene .

Homes shattered as they were swept away, mudslides obstructed or completely washed out main routes into the city, leaving residents amid the destruction.

Ultimately, Simpson's return to the stage at Harrah's Cherokee Center was canceled due to damage left behind from the storm, the venue said.

But on Friday, Simpson announced a benefit concert supporting disaster relief efforts in North Carolina. He was scheduled to perform the next night in Cary at the Koka Booth Amphitheater, and the venue is set to host Simpson and his band for two nights for the benefit.
