Former KC news anchor Mark Alford easily wins a second term in Congress
Rep. Mark Alford, a Lake Winnebago Republican, won a second term in Congress Tuesday, gliding to an easy election win in Missouri's heavily conservative 4th Congressional District.
The Associated Press called the race for Alford at 9:24 p.m. At the time, Alford had 71.5% of the vote compared to Democrat Jeanette Cass' 26.1% and Libertarian Thomas Holbrook's 2.5%, according to the AP.
"We are honored to earn the overwhelming support of Missourians across the Fourth Congressional District," Alford said. "It is our privilege to be your voice and your vote in Washington and to be able to support each and every one of our 772,047 constituents."
Alford, 61, served as a news anchor at Fox 4 before resigning to run for Congress in 2021 in order to replace former Rep. Vicki Hartzler.
In his first term in Washington, Alford served on the House Armed Services, Agriculture and Small Business committees, focusing on issues that matter for a district that spans across south-central Missouri. He said at a campaign stop Monday that he hopes to join the House Appropriations Committee in his second term.
Alford has been a loyal vote for the House Republican caucus and has begun to set his eyes on bigger leadership roles. Last year, he ran for former House Speaker Mike Johnson's role as the House Republican Vice Chair, a leadership position.
While Alford's district includes part of Columbia, Democrats were unable to make much of a dent in Alford's vote total. He won by about 45 percentage points in 2022 and it appeared similar on Tuesday night.
