Former Manchester Police Chief Remembered For 'Community Commitment' Manchester is mourning the loss of a former police chief.

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester is mourning the loss of former police chief James Berry.

The announcement was made this week "with heavy hearts." Berry was 75.

Berry was sworn in as chief of police in Manchester in March 2004, following a "distinguished" career with the Hartford Police Department, where he retired as an assistant chief.

Berry also served as chief of police in Trumbull.

"Chief Berry showcased exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to our community and youth programs during his five-year tenure with the Manchester Police Department," local law enforcement officials said.

In 2009, Berry accepted a chief's position in Kentucky

"His impact on Manchester will always be remembered," local law enforcement officials said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Berry's family, friends, and co-workers—each of whom had the honor of knowing and working alongside him."

The Paducah Police Department also hailed Berry's work with young people.

"During his tenure at the Paducah Police Department, Chief Berry dedicated his time to innovations in training and community outreach bringing in programs such as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for officers and spearheading the Junior Citizen's Police Academy for teenagers interested in law enforcement," department officials said. "His leadership left a mark on our agency and our community. We honor his memory and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. Rest in peace, Chief Berry."
