Former Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez Guilty in Corruption Case

That was fast.

The jury in the public corruption trial of a former Miami-Dade commissioner came back with an all-guilty verdict within hours of closing arguments Thursday night.

It took the panel only three hours to unanimously agree with prosecutors that Joe Martinez took $15,000 in kickbacks from business owners in exchange for sponsoring an ordinance about shipping containers behind a strip mall.

Prosecutor Tim VanderGiesen argued that "a public official can't shake people down to benefit themselves with their public jobs."

When sentenced, the former elected official and police officer now faces up to 20 years in prison.

After being found guilty on both charges, Martinez's pre-sentencing hearing is set for Dec 20th.

Martinez and his attorneys plan to appeal.

"Look, everybody here, my family, they've been with me every single day, right? And it hurts," an emotional Martinez said after the verdict. "And you ask every one of my kids and they're still proud."
