Friends, neighbors remember victim killed in quadruple murder, suicide

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — We are continuing to learn more about the five men involved in the murder-suicide from Sunday in south Wichita.

Only one neighbor KSN spoke to would go on camera. This comes as a sobering reminder of how raw emotions are, so soon after police discovered the bodies of five men across three separate crime scenes. The name that came up most was Terry Meyer, whose friends and neighbors want to be remembered for how he lived, not the tragedy of his death.

The grisly scale of the crimes is leaving an air of uneasiness for many neighbors.

"You can feel it in the air," neighbor Diego Otero said.

Otero lives just two doors down from one of the houses recently wrapped in police tape. He says he didn't know Meyer personally but distinctly remembers how often he'd see him working on projects in his driveway. His cars and prized motorcycle are under near-constant maintenance.

Police say Meyer's stepson, Joshua Stickney, is the one who shot and killed him. According to them, Stickney also shot and killed his biological father, Anthony Stickney and two neighbors, Donald Dodge and Alan Young. Police released the names of the victims but not the answer to the biggest question: why?

"We're continuing to investigate on-scene evidence, digital evidence and conduct interviews to determine what led up to this incident," Captain Aaron Moses, WPD public information officer, said in an interview.

Now, friends and neighbors say Meyer is known in the community as a talented mechanic. A former coworker, who wished to remain anonymous, described Meyer as a brother. He was the type of person who always took the time out of his day to help out his friends. Ultimately, he boiled Meyer's personality down to a simple, "Bring it over, and I'll take care of it."

Another friend, who knew Meyer for over 40 years, said in a Facebook message to KSN, "He taught me how to drive stick, change my oil, engine swaps, to ride a motorcycle. I am heartbroken by his passing. He was one of the kindest souls you could ever meet."

Meyer and the other victim's loss spurs Diego Otero to check in on his neighbors.

"My next-door neighbor, which was feet away. I was going to go talk to her today because I can't imagine how she feels," Otero said. "I don't talk to anybody, I don't bother anybody, but something like this calls for a visit."

Despite the pain radiating through the community, friends and neighbors are thinking of Meyer's family and the loved ones of the others involved.

WPD previously said they believe the murder-suicide stemmed from mental health. We asked Wichita police in their first on-camera interview about the incident and if mental health workers had been called to the homes before. They responded that they are still gathering information and wouldn't confirm what capacity mental health was involved.
