From Meditation To Magic, Here's How CT Is Recharging This Weekend It may be the Election of a Lifetime, but enough is enough! Here's how to get your mind off the Red and the Blue, for at least a weekend...CONNECTICUT — Hopefully the results of the Election of Our Lifetime will be done and done on Election Day night, but even if our chads are still hangin' come Wednesday morning, there's still the weekend...
It's going to be a noisy week no matter how the political coin lands — why not detox and release your negative energies in a wave of soothing vibrations ? The Conduit Center , based in East Hartford, will be holding another sound meditation concert at American Karate Center in the Meadowview Plaza in Ellington, Friday, Nov. 8, 7 to 8:30 p.m. BYOZGC — Bring Your Own Zero-Gravity Chair — or even just a yoga mat and pillow will do. Register online here .
If you don't find the sounds of live gongs soothing, or prefer bowls of the non-singing variety, head out to the 70th Annual St. Sophia Greek Food Festival in New London. From 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Nov. 6, 7, 8 you can grab a gyro and get your grape leaves stuffed. All the food is prepared right there at St. Sophia Church .
The Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven is the oldest continuously running suburban trolley line in the USA, and this Sunday, Nov. 10, the staff will be taking on some guest motormen . Participants will receive a hands-on operating experience behind the wheel on the historic trolley line. If your kids (or you) are train buffs, the experience of moving the controller, operating the brakes, and (yes!) ringing the bell while navigating the scenic tracks along the Farm River should be unforgettable. Register to reserve your slot online here .
The Honoring the Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center will pay tribute to Native and non-Native Americans who have served side by side in the U.S. Armed Forces for over two centuries. The event on Saturday, Nov. 9, is expected to draw nearly 1,000 veterans and their families for an afternoon of "breathtaking performances, amazing hand-crafted regalia and traditional music as dancers and singers compete inside the soaring, two-story, glass-encased Gathering Space." Admission is included with your ticket to the museum .
For an experience that is considerably less down-to-earth, be sure to check out the Champions of Magic: Chasing the Unbelievable on Sunday, Nov. 10. The illusions conjured by the team of sorceror-showmen have been called " mind-bending "and " a magic show worthy of our video game and Instagram times ." They'll be performing at the Garde Arts Center in New London on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available online here .
...or you can just jettison the Election Day state of mind completely, flip the calendar page, and get a start on your Christmas shopping and decorating. The Watertown History Museum will be hosting its 3rd Annual Holiday Wreath Festival & Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the United Methodist Church Hall . Find the perfect gift at one of the many vendor booths, but be sure to bid on one of the gorgeous holiday wreaths for your front door, donated by the community.
