Galilee Church funding measure postponed
CADDO PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Caddo Commission discusses the funding measure to turn a church into a Community Lighthouse.
Several people addressed the commission Thursday in support of the measure saying it is a needed resource that is going to help residents around two churches already selected which are Morning Star Baptist Church and the Highland Center.
Commissioner Roy Burrell and several other commissioners are looking to approve $500,000 in American Rescue Plan money to turn Galilee Baptist Church into a Community Lighthouse for the Allendale community. The project places large-scale solar power, back-up batteries, and generators to maintain electricity during mass power outages.
Other Community Lighthouses are underway in Louisiana. Parish leaders said it is needed in northwest Louisiana because the most loss of life during a natural disaster occur when residents are left days without power. Also as a proactive response to the mass outage that occurred this past June and the deadly freeze of 2021.
The commissioners discussed the constraints of allocating the money despite the need. Ultimately deciding to postpone the vote for two-weeks.
