WASECA — The little details the Rochester Mayo girls hockey team has been working to refine in practices over the past few weeks paid off Tuesday night.

Eighth-grader Brooklyn Rippentrop scored her first varsity goal, while Spartans veterans Katie Cummings and Olivia Dahl also scored once each to help Mayo earn its first victory of the season — and the first for first-year head coach Marcel Black — 3-1 against the South Central Flyers at Faribault Ice Arena.

South Central is a co-op of eight school districts including Waseca and Faribault; it will play in Section 1, Class 2A in the postseason.

Mayo put more than 50 shots on goal in the win, while Spartans' goalie Grace Kober stopped 11 to earn her first win of the season.

Mayo (1-2-0 overall) scored once in each period. Dahl opened the scoring with 25 seconds to play in the first. Cummings extended the lead to 2-0 seven minutes into the second period, then Rippentrop capped Mayo's scoring with her first goal, 7:22 into the third.

The Flyers answered 1:19 later with their lone goal, scored by sophomore McKenna Mortensen.

For Mayo, Milania Black, Natalie Campbell, Sophie Regan, Dahl and Ariyah McKibben had one assist apiece.

"It was a good night to put a lot of things together we've been working through in practice," coach Black said. "This team will come together and do good things this season. We just need more time on the ice!"

Mayo plays at Northfield next Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:15 p.m.

KASSON — Dodge County had just one power play Tuesday night.

It was a big one, though, as star senior forward Nora Carstensen scored her second power-play goal in as many games to get the No. 3-ranked Wildcats on the board. They didn't let up after that, rolling to an 8-1 victory against Minneapolis at the Dodge County Ice Arena.

The first of Carstensen's two goals in the game came with 1:36 to go in the first period and gave her team a 1-0 lead after one. The Wildcats carried that momentum into the second period and used it to crush any hopes of a Minneapolis comeback. Dodge County scored six times in a span of 9 minutes, 1 second in the second period to pull away.

Taryn Wernecke scored 5:51 into the period, then again just 7 seconds later to make it 3-0.

Kylie Meyer, Daisy Harnes, Hannah Peterson and Carstensen all added goals for a 7-0 lead after two. Meyer added another in the third to cap the scoring.

Freshman defender Josie Fulton recorded her first point as a Wildcat, assisting on Peterson's goal with 2:08 remaining in the second period.

Meyer added two assists for a four-point game. Zoe Heimer also had two assists, while Bryn Spreiter, Mollie Koch, Alexa Van Straaten, Maysie Koch and Harens had one assist each.

Ida Huber stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced. The standout senior goalie will sign her National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play for Division I Long Island University.
